Cyber security basics for small business owners

By Success Mike LLC · October 3, 2026

Small businesses in every industry are targets, because attackers expect weaker protection. You can close most common gaps with a few steady habits.

1. Use a password manager

Give every account a long, unique password. A password manager makes that practical.

2. Turn on multi-factor authentication

Add a second step, such as an app code, to email, banking and cloud accounts. This stops most simple account takeovers.

3. Keep software updated

Install updates for your operating systems, browsers and apps. Updates often fix known security holes.

4. Back up your data

Keep copies of key files in a separate place, and test that you can restore them.

5. Train your team

Show staff how to spot phishing emails and what to do if they click a bad link. Remove access when someone leaves.
